چکیده

Vibration analysis can be used as a more sensitive alternative to conventional techniques for the detection of loosening of total hip replacement (THR) components. The vibration modes of the human femur and of selected THR prosthetic stems were studied by experimental modal analysis using a CADA-X system and by finite element simulation using MARC/Mentat software. Two hypotheses were formulated: (1) the differences between the vibrational behaviour of an intact femur and of the system formed by a femur and an implanted prosthesis will increase with increasing complexity of the mode shapes of the system; (2) when a prosthesis is implanted in a femur, the vibration modes of the prosthesis will be more affected by this interaction than the modes of the femur. After confirming these hypotheses, a method for peroperative assessment of the fixation quality of a THR stem was derived, based on the frequency shifts of the vibration modes of the system.

Cementless Hip Arthroplasty in Southern Iran, Midterm Outcome and Comparison of Two Designs

Background: Cementless hip prosthesis was designed to provide biologic fixation, without the use of cement. The second generation components have shown more reliable bone ingrowths and survival rates. We are reporting a midterm result of two designs of cementless prosthesis in a unique culture with different social habits and expectations. Methods: 52 primary cementless total hip arthroplasty in...

In vivo implant fixation of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK hip prostheses in an ovine model.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR/PEEK) is theoretically suitable as a material for use in hip prostheses, offering excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and the absence of metal ions. To evaluate in vivo fixation methods of CFR/PEEK hip prostheses in bone, we examined radiographic and histological results for cementless or cemented CFR/PEEK hip prostheses in an ovi...

Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty After an Iatrogenic Subtrochanteric Fracture due to Hardware Removal: A Case Report

Introduction: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) after proximal femoral fixation is a challenging procedure due to possible hardware-related complications. Case presentation: A 78-year-old female with hip osteoarthritis had a proximal femoral osteotomy fixed using a blade plate in the same femur 41 years ago. A two-step approach was planned. After a challenging...

Cementless Hydroxyapatite Coated Hip Prostheses

More than twenty years ago, hydroxyapatite (HA), calcium phosphate ceramics, was introduced as a coating for cementless hip prostheses. The choice of this ceramic is due to its composition being similar to organic apatite bone crystals. This ceramic is biocompatible, bioactive, and osteoconductive. These qualities facilitate the primary stability and osseointegration of implants. Our surgical e...
